Picturing Trails is an original body of work commissioned by 4Culture and King County (WA) Parks and Trails for the portable works collection, created between 2017 and 2019. It is a lens-based story of the area's Regional Trails System (RTS) through small vignettes of the natural world. The images are moments found along the paths, small scenes of larger cycles to witness as we pass through the space. The series highlights the varying ecosystems and characteristics, reminding us that nature exists not next to us, however, with us.
Picturing Trails was a remarkable experience of exploration and observation, allowing for my own consideration of home in a larger ecological context. I sat and observed the leaves, insects, sounds, and smells. As our region increases in population, the natural world is willing, out of necessity, to live next to our growth. As soon as I stepped onto the trail, I was quickly in a forest or a wetland or a field. I wish for these images to encourage the viewer’s own stillness and observation while along King County's Regional Trails.
Picturing Trails was commissioned by King County, WA and images are not for sale. The work exhibited at Gallery 4Culture in February of 2020 before becoming part of the King County Portable Works Collection.
